Single Player boredom, Multi-Player Awesome Apr 26, 2007

Once I got over the novelty of blowing off limbs and blood spurting stumps, Soldier of Fortune 2s single player campaign was a game that I quickly dismissed as nothing new and at times boring. However when I began playing the multi-player portion of the game I began a long love affair with SOF2. One of the best aspects of SOF2s multi-player is that all the weapons in the game are a lethal threat, including the handgun. Many 1st person shooters with a multi-player component become nothing more than a race to get the rocket launcher or chain-gun. Some games like the latest ‘Doom’ failed in this respect because the starting weapon, a machine gun was practically ineffective. This becomes frustrating. A pistol is SOF2s starting weapon and is an immediate and realistic threat. The player models are broken into hit locations which attempt to reflect damage to each location realistically. Obviously a shot through the heart or head is instant death. The blood and gore is a bit over the top, but in a sick sort of way more cathartic then just having your opponent fall over with no sign of injury, much like a 1950s TV western. One other aspect I find appealing is the game speed. The players move at a realistic pace. When you frag someone you at least get to see it. Many 1st person shooters seemed to be in hyper speed, you’re moving around and shooting so fast that you only know you got a kill is when it's listed in the info screen.<br />
rnrnAlthough this games graphics and physics are outdated it still is one of the few games that our local LAN gaming club will always go back to when we get bored with whatever is the latest shiny new 1st person toy. I have yet to find a system that it will not work on and the SOF2 community is a large and thriving one. After market maps and mods are extremely abundant. In conclusion; Single player 3 stars, multi-player 5 stars. If your looking for a multi-player frag fest that’s both fun and satisfying Soldier of Fortune 2 fits the bill.
